Echoes from the Diaspora Poetry of Affirmation, Inspiration, History and Hope: Heard Spoken Lived

Echoes from the Diaspora is a rare find, presenting a collage of poem-stories that underscores the raw, yet poignant beauty of words as they paint pictures of real life as happened and continues to happen, particularly to people of color in the diaspora. The word “diaspora” as used here, speaks to people who live outside of their places of origin, whether Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, North, Central or South America. It also speaks to people who for whatever reason feel dissociated or alienated from their communities based on: age, body image, culture, disability, ethnicity, expectation, gender.
Some stories are told from the poet’s personal experiences and viewpoint, others are based on interactions with colleagues, diverse groups of people, and students. The people most impacted and written of here, are the descendants of those captured, uprooted and forced into slavery as a part of the Triangular Trade and whose location is the Caribbean, Europe - particularly England - and the United States. It is against this backdrop of exclusion, racism and its accompanying trauma that many of the poems were created.
The poems speak of the search for physical, emotional and spiritual belonging. They speak of love, friendship, the struggle to stand firmly in the truth of positive aspirations, and traditional, cultural norms. They speak of internal and external conflict. “Echoes” addresses loss, the search for identity, the movement toward wellness, self-acceptance, and self-determination despite suffering. While creating context for the traditional roles of women, as well as countering the narrative often associated with men in the diaspora, this text places, on canvas, the feelings of inadequacy felt by those who are made to feel ugly because they are different, the shame associated with namelessness, the fear of not being seen or having voice(s) silenced.
Echoes from the Diaspora brings to life details and themes that people consider important, regardless of socially designated labels, often meant to divide, such as “race”, color, and class. Most importantly, it speaks of the shared experiences of all people, our linear, inextricable and eternal links to each other.
Ultimately speaking of hope in the now as well as in the future, Echoes from the Diaspora should not be seen as a niche endeavor, because its reach is so much wider than the reading of a few poems.

Understanding Myself: My Dialectical Journal into Self-Acceptance (2) (My Wellness Journey)

"Understanding Myself: My Dialectical Journal into Self-acceptance" is the second in a three-part series of interactive dialectical wellness journals. It is divided into two sections: Part One contains contributions from the journal's designer, in addition to personal stories and original responses from a group of previously unpublished authors. These authors are diverse in terms of age, background, culture, ethnicity, gender, history. They present creative, current, personal, even at times controversial topics from their varied perspectives. Each "story" is real, each shows the impact of events, people, and situations on the lives of those who have lived the experiences. The stories reflect the complexities of life and are expressions of fears, loss, and hurt, but they are also stories of love, hope and the resilience of the human spirit. Part Two encourages individuals to reflect on their daily or long-term experiences and feelings, by examining their causes, their effects on the journey, themselves, the people in their lives and those in their community or tribe. Icons are provided for those who need a little help to get started, to express their feelings. This dialectical journal is centered around providing a safe space for self-discovery, self-acceptance, and self-empowerment, through honest discourse and reflection. Part Two is where individuals tell their own stories. Speak their truth. Speak their power.

Saving Myself: A Journey into Wellness (Finding and Loving Me in a World Filled with Challenges and Injustice.)

"Saving Myself: A Journey into Wellness…" is empowering. Each entry provides unique opportunities for people to take control of their thoughts, reactions, and emotions. It connects the writer through thought and process by creating a safe place to identify and examine situations, relationships, and their impact. It is used by all ages, as a personal reflection tool, allowing for calm, rational contemplation during times of stress. It is also used as a beginner's staple for those needing a place to start as they aspire to master the art of the skilled communicator.
There is an additional, yet unexpected, but incredible bonus, during these complicated times. The journals are being used to record information that is shared with health care professionals, by those who need to monitor their activities and feelings in real time, or over a period of time.
It also provides positive self-affirming statements to help people see the goodness and light in themselves.
